Career Summary

Chris McCann joined Atlanta United with more than a decade of experience playing professionally in England. In his first season in MLS, McCann made 23 appearances and nine starts, showing his versatility by playing multiple positions in midfield as well as left back. McCann accumulated more than 350 first team appearances with Burnley and Wigan Athletic. Most of his experience comes from the League Championship, but McCann has also appeared in the Premier League and League One.

2017 (Atlanta United): McCann made 23 appearances and nine starts, playing multiples roles in midfield and left back in his first MLS season. He tallied two assists, one in a 7-0 win over New England on Sept. 13 and the other in a 3-3 draw versus Orlando on Sept. 16. MLS Cup Playoffs: Started at left back against Columbus on Oct. 26. US Open Cup: Started both matches against Charleston Battery on June 14 and at Miami FC on June 28.

2016 (Atlanta United FC): Atlanta United signed McCann on July 6, 2016 and sent him on loan to League One club Coventry City. McCann scored his first goal with Coventry against Port Vale FC (Oct. 1).

2015/2016 (Wigan): McCann returned to a more consistent starting role as he was featured in the starting lineup 31 of his 38 league matches. He finished with four goals and six assists with his most outstanding performance coming against Blackpool on April 30 when he scored the opening goal and later recorded two assists in a 4-0 win.

2014/2015 (Wigan): McCann was featured in the starting lineup 11 times in 17 league matches, scoring twice. Wigan was relegated to League One after finishing in the bottom three of the Championship.

2013/2014 (Wigan): McCann signed with Wigan Athletic on June 26, 2013 after the expiration of his contract with Burnley. He appeared in 27 league matches and scored twice.

2012/2013 (Burnley): McCann started in 40 of his 41 league appearances and matched his previous year’s goal total with four. The Burnley captain had a career day against Bristol City on Oct. 23 when he dished out two assists and scored a game-winning header in the 90th minute for a 4-3 victory. He finished the season with eight assists.

2011/2012 (Burnley): In his first full season since the 2008/2009 season, McCann was named captain of Burnley by manager Eddie Howe. He started in 45 of his 46 league appearances. McCann recorded the first brace of his professional career against Ipswich on Nov. 29 in a 4-0 rout. He finished the year with four goals and four assists in league play.

2010/2011 (Burnley): McCann again picked up a knee injury in the preseason which sidelined him for most of the season. He made his return on the road against Derby on April 23 and scored in the 74th minute. McCann played in four matches, starting all of them and scoring the one goal.

2009/2010 (Burnley): In Burnley’s first season in the Premier League in club history, McCann helped the Clarets get off to a 3-3 start before injuring his knee against Sunderland (Sept. 19). He made his return in an FA Cup match against Reading (Jan. 23), playing the full 90 minutes. McCann reinjured his knee in his Premier League return against Bolton (Jan. 26) and was sidelined the rest of the season. Burnley returned to the Championship after being relegated.

2008/2009 (Burnley): McCann was named Burnley’s Young Player of the Year after he started in all 44 of his appearances while recording a then-career-high six goals and four assists. He scored on consecutive games against Reading (Oct. 4) and Birmingham (Oct. 18). Burnley won the Championship Playoffs, edging Sheffield United in the final 1-0 to earn the club’s first promotion to the Premier League.

2007/2008 (Burnley): McCann started in 34 of his 35 appearances, netting five goals for the season. He recorded his first senior assist against Colchester United on Sept. 1 which put his side ahead 3-1 in the 63rd minute as the game ended in a 3-2 Burnley victory.

2006/2007 (Burnley): McCann played in 38 matches, starting in 24. He scored five goals, including a game-winning header in the 90th minute against Ipswich (Nov. 4).

2005/2006 (Burnley): After progressing though the youth academy, McCann made his professional debut for Burnley against Coventry City on Aug. 13, coming on as a substitute in the 12th minute. He scored his first senior goal against Ipswich Town on Sept. 27 in a 3-0 victory. He appeared in 23 league matches and started in 15.
