Supporters Culture: Undying Passion for the Game, the Club, and the City

Supporters 022317

They’re on their feet for 90 minutes. They stay regardless of the score. They lead the chants that amplify the crowd.

They have no specific shape, form or identity, but they all have one thing in common: an unrelenting passion for the game, the club, and the city.

The supporters are more than just fans. They are the most dedicated, the rowdiest, and in other parts of the world, in particular Europe, they are dubbed “Ultras” deriving from the Latin word “Ultra” meaning beyond in English.

When a team’s home field is known to be intimidating and difficult to play at, it’s not because of the facility. It’s due to the fact that their supporters create this uncomfortable, overwhelming, loud atmosphere to shake the visiting side and encourage their own club. Often characterized by unified chants, decked out fans, and large banners, the supporters usually occupy a specific section of the venue and inspire the entire stadium to stand behind their team.

This powerful culture is driven through traditions and matchday rituals. Beyond the success on the field, clubs are renowned for the passion demonstrated by their supporters. Some more well-known traditions include Liverpool’s singing of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” prior to every home match, Seattle’s supporters march to the stadium, Portland Timber’s commemorative chopping of the log after goals, and Borussia Dortmund’s “Yellow Wall” one of the largest free standing supporters sections in the world.

The global sport that is the beautiful game has arrived in the South and this is your chance to be a part of the unwavering, unique culture.
