ATLANTA (Sept. 4, 2025) - MLS NEXT Pro today announced that Atlanta United 2’s Gabriel Wesseh was awarded MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Month for August. The Liberian earns his first monthly award in his first season in MLS NEXT Pro.
“We are thrilled for Gabriel to be honored as MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of the Month,” said Atlanta United Director of Methodology Javier Peréz. “Gabriel only joined the Academy last year, but he has taken tremendous steps in his development throughout his time with Atlanta United. We can’t wait to continue watching him grow through our player development pathway, and our second team is an excellent vessel for him to do that."
The 17-year-old started all six of ATL UTD 2’s matches in August, providing three assists in his 443 minutes played. Wesseh played a team-high 18 key passes last month and is tied for the most assists on the team with four on the season. Earlier this season, Wesseh earned MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of Matchweek 7 for his performance against Carolina Core FC, where he scored and added an assist in his first professional start. On the season, Wesseh has started 14 of his 18 games played and has scored three goals.
ATL UTD 2 (7-8-8, 31 points) is currently on break from MLS NEXT Pro action due to the FIFA international break, and will return to play on Saturday, Sept. 13 as it travels to Carolina Core FC at Truist Point Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, MLSNEXTPro.com).
