Mario Cruz joined Atlanta United as head athletic trainer in December 2016 ahead of the club’s inaugural season. His responsibilities include overseeing and directing all aspects of medical care, including injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, and the well-being of all players on the First Team.
Previously, Cruz worked in the same capacity as the head athletic trainer for Chicago Fire FC. Before his time with Chicago, Cruz was the rehabilitation coordinator at Tennessee Tech University from 2013 to the end of 2015.
Cruz graduated with honors from Georgia Southern University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine with an emphasis in Athletic Training. Following his graduation from GSU, he attended the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, where he earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2009. In 2013, he became a Board Certified Sports Specialist through the ABPTS.
Cruz lives in Marietta with his wife Katherine and his sons Colin and Colby.
