In March, the Marin Family were enjoying a normal day at home in Atlanta until arriving at their front door were cameras, balloons and a group from Atlanta United including midfielder Julian Gressel who carried two large tickets, good for an all-expense paid-for trip to an Atlanta United away match.
The Marins were the first winners of the cub’s “Flags Out” campaign which encourages all fans to showcase their Atlanta United flags for all to see with the chance of winning a grand prize.
This week Cesar Marin and his son Alejandro experienced their prize in motion as they traveled to Portland to see their beloved Atlanta United play at Providence Park.
Before being picked up in the five-striped Atlanta United Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, the first order of business was to ensure they possessed all their gear for their voyage, including their lucky flag that earned them the trip. The Marin family flag brought some good fortune as Atlanta United broke their two-match losing streak and battled to a 1-1 draw against a strong Portland side and in front of a rowdy Timbers Army. Coincidence or perhaps fate, Atlanta’s goal scorer on the day was none other than the player who gifted the Marins prize at their front door, Julian Gressel himself.
“I really never thought this would happen,” said Alejandro. “It just puts me in awe that I’m in the same hotel as the players that I watch on TV. It’s crazy to think about that I’m here.”
“Not only is it a dream come true to come and be able to support your team somewhere else,” said Cesar, “but to be able to do it with one of my sons, it’s something we’ll never forget.”
Enjoying the company of not only fellow Atlanta United fans but also the dedicated, kind supporters of the Timbers, Cesar was able to exchange a scarf with one of the home fans, taking home an unforgettable experience with his son and a memento of their journey to Portland.
