His story began in Cameroon. His talents were forged in Switzerland. He proved himself in France and Germany. Now, he’s coming to Atlanta.
Breel Embolo is Atlanta United’s new forward, a designated player signing with a contract through 2030. He came up a prized prodigy, made his own path in Europe, and now, he takes on a new challenge with the 5-Stripes.
Comfortable on the biggest stages
Embolo will, at the very least, have a couple of teammates he can relate to off the bat when he gets to Atlanta. Like Miguel Almirón and Júnior Alonso, the forward represented his country at the FIFA 2026 World Cup™.
The Swiss international has made 92 appearances for his country, scoring 26 goals and tallying 20 assists in that time. In three World Cup campaigns throughout his career, he’s averaged a goal contribution every other match. In this summer’s edition of the world’s tournament, Embolo helped lead Switzerland to a quarterfinals berth, starting all six matches and producing 4 goal contributions.
It's not just matches with Switzerland where Embolo has excelled. The forward has played in 380 matches of league play in the top-flights of countries like France, Germany and Switzerland. In stints with FC Basel, Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Schalke 04, AS Monaco and Stade Rennais F.C, he tallied 100 goals and 66 assists.
He’s also got 30 matches of UEFA Champions League and 27 matches of UEFA Europa League football under his belt, with 16 goal contributions across those competitions. In Monaco’s 2024-25 season, Embolo helped his team finish third in Ligue 1 and make it out of the group stage of the Champions League.
The man originally from Yaoundé, Cameroon has seen so many varieties of professional football, and MLS will be his next. Now, how will he fit in with the 5-Stripes?
A cornerstone of an effective attack
Breel Embolo slots into an Atlanta United team under the direction of head coach Tata Martino. The Argentine manager outlined what features make player a prime candidate to fit at striker in his system.
“We have wingers who normally play as a third midfielder, number 10, so we don’t just need a forward who knows how to combine well with teammates but also a forward who has a presence in the box, who has the ability to run into space, make short diagonal runs,” Martino said in Spanish earlier in the month. “That’s a bit of what we’re looking for."
In Embolo, Martino will find quite the quality candidate to fill that role. The striker’s 6-foot frame allows him to balance physicality, holding space, with mobility, taking space. Henderson referenced Embolo’s ability to be a cog in the attacking machine as one of the reasons he would fit in Atlanta United’s system.
Looking at his most recent season in 2025-26 with French club Stade Rennais, some of the underlying statistics shed a light on just how effective Embolo can be in buildup. Compared with other qualifying Ligue 1 forwards, Breel had 0.13 second assists per 90 minutes, placing him in the top 10%. His dribble success rate, 55.6%, was within the top 30%.
An equally valuable feature for an attacker in Martino’s setup is defensive work rate. Henderson cited Embolo’s “tireless” effort defensively as another feature that makes him fit the mold. Last season, the forward was firmly in the top 20% of Ligue 1 forwards in both defensive actions and tackles plus interceptions. That effort will show on the pitch by way of more chances in dangerous areas further up the pitch.
But, of course, the striker’s main objective won’t come as a surprise to anyone. Atlanta United will call on Embolo to score goals that earn results, and he’s uniquely equipped to do so. The Swiss international was in the top 10% of Ligue 1 strikers in non-penalty expected goals, a stat that calculates the likelihood of his shots finding the back of the net, subtracting penalty kicks. He was top 20% percent in goals per shot on target, showcasing his clinical nature when finishing.
As Atlanta United charges on in the 2026 season, Embolo will join the cause as soon as he is eligible. With him will come anticipation and expectation, that which can be fulfilled through the drive he’s accustomed to bringing to any side.
