A dreary day in Toronto was met with some muddy play. Turnovers, tough tackles, injuries, it was far from clean Saturday afternoon. But two spotless strikes from the 5-Stripes earned them a much-needed road result. Alexey Miranchuk and Tristan Muyumba's second-half goals lifted Atlanta United to its first road win of the 2026 season, a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC.Â
What happened
A wet, cold day in Toronto had its effect on the early proceedings, with passing miscues and frequent turnovers for both sides. In a match that was expected to involved a lot of scoring, it was clear from the opening few minutes that the conditions would make that much less likely.Â
The first chance of the match was created by the visitors, as a Matt Edwards cross was excellently placed to Luke Brennan. He tried to get a foot on it, but the Toronto defender cleared.Â
The 5-Stripes took early charge of possession, as they've done often this season. Toronto were more direct in the first 20 minutes, though, as they got close to finding the opener in the 17th minute. Edwards had to make a block with his body to prevent a close-range cross to an open Toronto attacker. Josh Sargent got a second-chance shot off, but Atlanta cleared.Â
From a moment that looked non-threatening at first, Cayman Togashi pounced, taking a bouncing ball from a flicked header through on goal and putting it in the back of the net in the 22nd minute. A minute later, head official Ismail Elfath ruled the goal back for offsides. During the play, Togashi was shaken up with an injury that forced him off the pitch minutes later.Â
Emmanuel Latte Lath came onto the pitch in the 27th minute in a game that was slowed to a near halt with injuries. Between Togashi's and José Cifuentes, who also was forced off the pitch with an injury in the 30th minute, there was a run of around five minutes where the ball was not put in play for more than a moment.Â
As the game got its rhythm back, Atlanta United retook the initiative. The earned a few corners, taking their tally up to five on the afternoon in the first 40 minutes. With all the stoppages, seven minutes of time were added onto the end of the first half, in which little took place.Â
As the second half started, it felt anything positive offensively would have to be taken, not given, especially given the conditions. That was the way the match was going until Sargent brought Jay Fortune down just outside the box a minute after the restart, a prime opportunity for Atlanta from a set piece.Â
Alexey Miranchuk stood over the free kick alongside Tristan Muyumba, but it was the captain who stepped up to strike. His left-footed contact was pure, looping the wall and roofing the net to put the 5-Stripes ahead 1-0 in the 48th minute. It was the first direct free kick goal for the 5-Stripes since 2023.
Toronto's conceding woke up their attack, playing with much more urgency in the final third. For the 5-Stripes, who were in command for a majority of the match before scoring, there were some nervous moments defending.Â
In the 60th minute, Sargent broke away and was brought down about 10 yards outside the box. Toronto looked to respond with a free kick goal of their own, but the strike from Alonso Coello was just wide of the right post.
Just as it looked like Toronto was going to break into the match, a smooth sequence from the 5-Stripes made it two. Cooper Sanchez carried the ball forward and found substitute Fafa Picault, who laid the ball off to Muyumba. He took a first-time crack that rippled the side netting to put Atlanta ahead 2-0 in the 67th minute.
Four minutes later, a strongly-struck header from Emilio Aristizábal got through for Toronto's first goal of the afternoon. In the span of just five minutes, the score went from 1-0 to 2-1 as both sides began to conquer the conditions and string together dangerous attacks.Â
The home side felt the wind of momentum and nearly tied things up in the 74th minute. Malik Henry skipped past an ElÃas Báez tackle and struck a low, curling shot that just missed the left post. Former 5-Stripe Derrick Etienne Jr. scored in the 84th minute, but celebrations were quickly cut short as the offside flag went up.
In the first of six minutes of added time, the hosts earned a corner and brought their goalkeeper Luka Gavran out of the net and up in the attack. Just earlier this week, Gavran scored an equalizer in the same scenario against Philadelphia Union, but it wasn't to be for the Reds. Though they pushed, Atlanta United defended well in last-ditch moments to seal a win.Â
Standouts
- Alexey Miranchuk's moment of individual brilliance was the difference for the 5-Stripes, but he had a much deeper impact on the game. The forward was a connector all day, picking up the ball in any area of the pitch and moving it toward goal, either by himself dribbling or dishing to his teammates.Â
- Stian Gregersen had another 90-minute display of force and discipline defensively. The center back has been thriving in good health in 2026, and he spearheaded the 5-Stripes' defensive effort. He won possession back 4 times and had a match-high 5 clearances.
Milestones
- Alexey Miranchuk scored his first direct free kick goal in MLS, also Atlanta United's first direct free kick goal in MLS play since May 17, 2023 (Thiago Almada) vs. Colorado. Moreso, Miranchuk's strike was the first direct free kick goal ever scored by Atlanta United in an away match.
- Tristan Muyumba scored his first goal for Atlanta United this season and his third in his MLS regular season career. The buildup to the goal was 18 total passes, the sixth-longest ever for Atlanta United in a regular season match.

- Cayman Togashi made his first career start in MLS and for Atlanta United in regular season play.
