A streak of three goals in three matches from a midfielder, especially one who typically plays defensive midfield, is a rarity. Well, Tristan Muyumba is in rare form. Atlanta United's number 8 was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday 21Â after his 81st minute goal gave the 5-Stripes their second win on the bounce.Â
Muyumba's night was one of patience. Early in the match, he waited for his opportunities to be on the ball, playing in a more advanced midfield role with Adrian Gill occupying the defensive midfield.Â
In the 78th minute, the 5-Stripes broke on the counter, and Muyumba's hustle was on full display. The man who covered 5.85 miles on the evening was full sprint in the closing stages as Tomás Jacob found Alexey Miranchuk, who laid the ball off to Muyumba. At the end of his run, it would've been really easy to speed things up, but the Frenchman was composed, closing his hips and cutting left past his defender.
He stuck his left foot through the ball and crushed it into the top left corner of the goal, running to the corner flag for celebrations with the entire squad.
Muyumba's goal was his third in as many matches, becoming just the ninth different Atlanta United player to score in three consecutive fixtures.Â
Tomás Jacob was also named to the Team of the Matchday bench after his screamer of a goal in the 37th minute gave Atlanta United their early advantage.
Jacob and Muyumba were just two of many difference makers in a dynamic result for Atlanta United, and they won't have to wait much longer to get back out on the pitch. The 5-Stripes suit up for Sunday night, as they'll take on Sporting Kansas City at 7 p.m. ET. Grab your tickets to see Muyumba, Jacob and the rest of the Atlanta United squad go for their third win in a row.
