Luiz Araújo has departed Atlanta United to join Brazil's Flamengo

Luiz Araújo has departed Atlanta United to join Brazilian club Flamengo, the reigning Copa Libertadores champion. The Brazilian winger's transfer was announced on May 18 and was originally set to leave Atlanta after the club's upcoming Saturday's match vs New York Red Bulls.

Atlanta signed Araújo via transfer from Lille OSC on Aug. 6, 2021. The 26-year-old leaves the club after 59 appearances in all competitions and 54 starts, scoring 11 goals and registering 12 assists. This season, Araújo scored three goals with two assists in 16 appearances in all competitions. Flamengo is currently third in the Brazilian Série A after 10 matches played and are coached by Argentine Jorge Sampaoli.

Atlanta United (7-4-8, 29 points) returns to action when it travels to face New York Red Bulls Saturday, June 24 at Red Bull Arena (7:30 p.m., MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor).
