In a matchup with a history of producing cinematic battles, Atlanta United's defeat to San Jose Saturday night was on the plainer side of things. The 5-Stripes fell 2-0, conceding a goal in each half in a match where they never truly got a hold of playing the protagonist role.
What happened: It was a chaotic start to a fixture that has seen plenty of chaos over the years. Just a minute in, Enea Mihaj put in a close tackle inside the box that nearly gave San Jose a penalty kick.
Earthquakes were aggressive with their press early on, forcing Atlanta United to be precise in picking out weak spots to move the ball forward. They came out firing, putting 4 shots on goal inside the first 10 minutes. The 5-Stripes were feeling the pressure for the better half of the first 20 minutes until Emmanuel Latte Lath earned a corner on a counterattack. Steven Alzate's longshot from a resulting second corner soared wide.
In the 24th minute, San Jose's mounting pressure paid off. Earthquakes intercepted a back pass, and Preston Judd got on the end of an ensuing cross with a lobbed header. The ball bounced into the bottom right corner to make the score 1-0.
At half, things had improved for the 5-Stripes by way of possession, leading slightly with 50.7%. But still trailing, Atlanta United were disjointed going forward in their quest to level the score. With just 3 shots and 1 on target, Tata Martino got to work at half to tweak his team's approach for the next 45.
The 5-Stripes came out of the break with more intention and energy, but it was San Jose with the best chance of the early second half. Lucas Hoyos had to make a one-on-one save in the 59th minute when the ball fell to Beau Leroux about 8 yards out.
Alexey Miranchuk and Tristan Muyumba were Martino's selections to enter the match in the 60th minute. Ten minutes later, Pedro Amador came onto the field. The Portuguese fullback tucked in alongside Alzate and Muyumba in the middle of the park as Atlanta United committed numbers forward.
San Jose nearly had a second goal in the 70th minute, but a pass in the buildup was ruled offsides. Nine minutes later, substitute Timo Werner got in behind the defense and assisted Ousseni Bouda for the second Earthquakes goal of the night.
The 5-Stripes pressed on to create some late chances, but they couldn't convert. They totaled 8 shots on the night but were only able to get 1 of them on target.
Standouts:
- Tomás Jacob was a bright spot throughout the match, once again putting in a physical and timely performance. His dueling ability won the ball back for his side on many occasions.
Milestones:
- Jacob won all eight duels he contested in the first half, becoming the second player in Atlanta United's league history to contest and win 8 or more duels in a half. With 9 duels won on the night, he took his total to 20 duels won on the season, second most through two matches in club history (Franco Ibarra - 24 in 2023).
- Pedro Amador made his season debut with a 20-minute substitute appearance.
