Career Summary

A 30-year-old center back from Alpharetta, Georgia, Ruthven brings more than eight years of professional playing experience to ATL UTD 2, including stints in Major League Soccer, USL, NASL and Europe. After playing collegiately at the University of South Carolina, he began his career in USL Pro with the Harrisburg City Islanders, now Penn FC, where he made his professional debut in 2010. Ruthven returned home and spent the 2011 NASL season with the Atlanta Silverbacks where he made 27 appearances.

After going on trial with the New York Red Bulls, Ruthven earned a contract with the MLS club in March of 2012 and made his league debut April 22 against D.C. United. He started the next four consecutive matches for the Red Bulls while keeping a clean sheet in three.

Ruthven took his talents to Europe in 2013 and played for Sweden’s IK Brage and Finland’s KuPS. He returned to the U.S. the following year and joined Arizona United, now Phoenix Rising, for the 2014-15 USL seasons. Ruthven anchored the Jacksonville Armada defense in 2016 before signing with fellow NASL club Miami FC last year. In Miami, Ruthven was a part of the squad which finished first in both the 2017 spring and fall seasons and reached the semifinals of the NASL playoffs and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup.

2018 (ATL UTD 2): Ruthven made four starts, including his team debut against FC Cincinnati (8/22) and played all 90 minutes.

2018 (Miami FC 2): Ruthven made 14 appearances for Miami FC 2 during the NPSL season. US Open Cup: Made one start against Miami United in a 3-1 loss.

2017 (Miami FC): Ruthven appeared in six matches, starting in five of them. He made 29 clearances, 10 blocks and five interceptions while completing 91.5 percent of his passes.

2016 (Jacksonville Armada): Ruthven played in 31 matches across the Spring and Fall seasons. He scored one goal in a 3-2 loss to Rayo OKC (9/11).

2015 (Arizona United): Ruthven made 23 appearances, scored one goal and recorded two assists.

2014 (Arizona United): Ruthven made 10 appearances in USL Pro league play. US Open Cup: Ruthven made two appearances against Timbers U-23s and La Galaxy.

2013 (Kuopion Palloseura): In the Finnish first division, Ruthven made seven starts and one start in the domestic Suomen Cup.

2013 (IK Brage): Ruthven made 12 appearances in Sweden’s second division.

2012 (New York Red Bulls): Ruthven appeared in five matches in MLS, starting four.

2011 (Atlanta Silverbacks): Ruthven started in all 27 of his appearances in NASL play. He scored one goal and recorded two assists.

2010 (Harrisburg City Islanders): Ruthven turned pro in 2010 and made eight appearances with Harrisburg. He scored his first professional goal in a 3-2 win against Real Maryland Monarchs (7/10).

PERSONAL: A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, Ruthven attended Roswell High School and Milton High School. His father is former Major League Baseball pitcher Dick Ruthven, who won the 1980 World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies and was an All-Star with the Atlanta Braves.
