Atlanta United kicks off 2024 rivalry matchups at home against Orlando City SC

2024-Rivalry-Matches

Atlanta United's 2024 MLS season schedule was released on Wednesday, and six of Atlanta's 34 matches are against regional rivals – three at home, three on the road.

Let's look back at last season's results against each rival and when and where Atlanta will face them in 2024:

1. Orlando City SC

  • Sunday, March 17 (in Atlanta)
  • Saturday, October 19 (in Orlando) for Decision Day

Atlanta's first southeastern opponent of the season will be it's fiercest rival: Orlando City SC. The tension dates back to Atlanta's inaugural season in 2017 and has only grown since then. In May of 2023, the 5-Stripes stole a point on the road in their first matchup with an 86th minute equalizer from Tyler Wolff. A few months later, Orlando was the side to get the last laugh after coming back 2-1 to get the win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The two sides will face off at the tail ends of the 2024 season. Atlanta will host Orlando for its third match of the year, then the 5-Stripes will close out the regular season against the Lions on Decision Day at Exploria Stadium.

2. Nashville SC

  • Saturday, May 18 (in Nashville)
  • Saturday, September 14 (in Atlanta)

Home field advantage was certainly at play in the two matches between Atlanta and Nashville SC last season. Nashville secured a 3-1 win at GEODIS Park when the teams met in April. Then, the 5-Stripes returned the favor in August when they gave Nashville its worst loss in club history, a 4-0 rout in Atlanta.

The two clubs will have a similar four-month gap between each matchup next season, again with the first in Nashville and the second in Atlanta. Nashville holds a narrow 4-3-3 advantage over Atlanta in all competitions, so it will be exciting to see where that record stands at the end of 2024.

3. Charlotte FC

  • Sunday, June 2 (in Atlanta)
  • Saturday, August 31 (in Charlotte)

Atlanta’s newest rival of the three is Charlotte FC, which will be entering its third MLS season in 2024. Both sides have two wins apiece in their history, with both winning one match against the other last season. Unlike with Nashville, the visiting side dominated the matchups: Atlanta won 3-0 at Bank of America Stadium before Charlotte grabbed a 3-1 win on the road two months later.

Last season, the sides faced off twice in the first 12 matches of the year. This time, Atlanta United supporters will have to wait until the summer to watch the 5-Stripes face off against Charlotte in person.
