Home away from home: Miguel Almirón adjusting to Atlanta

170501 Miguel Almiron

The distance of nearly five thousand miles can involve changes in language, culture, weather and lifestyle. Born in Asunción, Paraguay, Miguel Almirón came to Atlanta United from Club Atlético Lanús, a professional club located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Despite the distance, adjusting to his new home here in Atlanta was fairly easy thanks to the warm welcome he received from fellow teammates.

“The process has been very good. From the moment I arrived at the club, I felt very welcome,” said Atlanta’s number 10. “I bonded with my teammates especially at first with the South American teammates, which was very important, and then I was able to get to know the other players on the team.”

Atlanta United have been on the move for the majority of their inaugural season traveling for four of their last five matches. But when the team is able to stay in Atlanta there is always plenty to do, which isn’t something familiar to players like Almirón.

“I have experienced many new things, just living here every day, everything is new to me,” said Almirón. “In South America, that doesn't exist. And what really has impressed me is the number of fans that come out to support our team every game.”

Miguel Almirón has taken full advantage of what Atlanta has to offer by exploring some of the familiar tourist attractions including that of the Georgia Aquarium which Almirón says is “very beautiful.” With a long season ahead, Almirón has plenty of time to explore the city, besides, he is in no rush. “I was also looking for a Latin cinema, but I hope to spend a long time here so I will have time to enjoy the city,” said Almirón.

Atlanta United has put together a true global roster. The team includes players from all over South America; Argentina, Paraguay and Chile as well as state-side cities like Decatur and Philadelphia. But no matter where you are from, everyone enjoys the appeal of a delicious, authentic meal. Known as a food town, Atlanta has an array of options and the 23-year-old Paraguayan is enjoying the culinary adventure.

“I do not have a favorite restaurant yet, but I went and ate at a place called Barcelona and a few others that I cannot remember the name of,” said Almirón. “But I still don’t have a favorite one.”

It’s apparent that Miguel Almirón is beginning to feel at home in the ATL, though it’s been difficult with the recent rigour of the team’s travel schedule. However, he and his teammates will have plenty of time to enjoy Atlanta and will play their next home match at Bobby Dodd Stadium on May 20th to face off against the Houston Dynamo. Until then, it’s trips to New York City and Portland ahead.
