What is the 2016 Expansion Draft?
The Major League Soccer Expansion Draft is a draft for expansion teams to acquire current MLS players from other teams in order to build their inaugural roster. Atlanta United and Minnesota United will be the only teams participating as they will be joining the league this upcoming season in 2017.
The existing 20 franchises in MLS are allowed to protect 11 players between their Senior, Supplemental and Reserve Roster. Any player left unprotected is available to be drafted by Atlanta or Minnesota (excluding Homegrown and Generation Adidas players). Each of the 2 teams will be able to acquire 5 new players through this process.
The Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday Dec. 13th, 2016 @2pm.
