Atlanta United Head Coach Gerardo Martino

On team earning “toughest” three points…

Playing down a man is difficult in any league, but I think in this league it’s particularly difficult. I think we were organized defensively and that’s what allowed us to get the result.

On injury updates of Jeff Larentowicz and Greg Garza…

At first glance they don’t seem like injuries that would keep them out of the next game, but we will have to see how they progress over the week.

On Minnesota’s performance in the first half…

I thought we circulated the ball and we created three or four really good scoring opportunities between Josef and Miguel. What we did have trouble with was winning the ball back from Minnesota. When they crossed into our half, it was difficult for us to win the ball back. They got in a few good crosses, but they really didn’t create any obvious goal scoring chances.

On yellow cards for Leandro Gonzalez Perez….

In general terms, I think so. I think they were fair.

On Leandro’s self control while playing…

On the first yellow card, I think it was a foul that Leandro had to make because the player was in on goal. On the second one, I don’t think that Leandro saw that the ball had already gone out of bounds. The referee made some signals that Leandro went in with his elbow, but I don’t think that’s the correct interpretation. I think he went in with his shoulder. However, it was risky because the ball went out of bounds and the player ended up being pushed into the boards.

On the games weather…

Both teams had to play in the same weather, so we each had to adapt to that. It’s a game that we’re leaving here with three points and that’s the important thing. It’s not a game that we’re going to remember for how well we played, but it’s a game that we’re going to remember for getting three points.

If this is Atlanta’s ugliest win…

Probably. But I also don’t want to undermine the effort that the guys put in tonight because I wouldn’t be doing justice to the team. We don’t only want to win when we’re able to play well, it’s great if were able to play well and win, but we also know we need to be able to get results.

Atlanta United Defender Michael Parkhurst

On keeping teammates organized…

It was a grind, but I think everybody just did their job today. It was really tough to communicate out there, our jaws and mouths were just frozen so it was really tough to talk. Everybody was just trying to do our part, and keep everything in front of us. We dealt with crosses as best we could and really limited their chances. It was just a great effort by everybody. We knew at halftime we were going to have to dig in and defend a lot and that’s what we did.

Atlanta United Defender Chris McCann

On game being “toughest” three points earned…

Yea I think it was just purely because of the conditions that we faced. It was just wave after wave of attack and defend, but we left everything out there. We headed, we tackled. Everybody did their part. It’s a massive three points. It’s great for team spirit to get wins like that, and it brings everyone together in the changing room. You can see how much it meant to the guys at the final whistle.

If last years’ match vs MNUFC influenced the result…

No I don’t think so. They have improved massively as a side and going anywhere on the road is a difficult task, there’s no really easy games. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. We knew it was going to be difficult. They’ve got some really good players and it was just the way it worked out. All that matters now is that we’ve got our first away win and three points on the board.

On team leadership…

It’s easy to say that Parkhurst is the captain, but I think when you go down like that you need more leaders on the field. You need everybody to their part, you can’t just be relying on one person. From behind us, we had Brad barking orders the whole day. He sees everything so it’s easy for him to push and pull the back. We were talking every time the ball went out of play, which seemed like every thirty seconds. We kept talking and plugging holes.

On temperature…

It felt cold. I couldn’t move my face. I don’t know if I have a permanent smile on my face, and my hands have gone numb. We knew what to expect coming up here. We knew it was going to be colder than last year, but like I said when you’re running around and concentrating on what’s going on, you put the weather in the back of your mind. We’ve got a job to do, and we did it fantastically well tonight.

Atlanta United Goalkeeper Brad Guzan

On holding of MNUFC...

I think it was a sense of determination, togetherness, fight and spirit. It wasn’t pretty. We’re not going to sit here and kid ourselves. It wasn’t pretty at all. Even before the red card, we were under pressure. So to come away with three points is massive.

On what this win says about the team…

This is a big step forward for us. When people think of Atlanta United they think of pretty football and tonight we showed another side. We showed that we could compete and that we could battle. We were down a man for more than half the game, so to win in these circumstances is fantastic.

On the games weather…

It’s not easy to play in that, but both teams had to endure the conditions. For some reason after the first two minutes we seemed that we couldn’t really get going, but that was enough for us. The conditions weren’t pretty. It was windy and obviously cold, but at the end of the day three points is all that matters.

On Atlanta’s early struggle…

We were struggling to get out. The conditions again weren’t that ideal. Some certain places on the pitch were a bit sticky, others were a bit quicker. Listen, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. Hopefully, come the end of the season this is result we can look back on and say “yeah it put us in a good position.”
