  • Date: September 15, 2018
  • Final Score: ATL 3-0 COL (Recap | Highlights)

Atlanta United FC Head Coach Gerardo Martino

On his team’s performance…

“I thought we had control of the game in the first half and it’s true that an afternoon summer game in Colorado is very difficult.”

On Darlington Nagbe’s performance…

“He played very, very well. He played more than we had planned. We planned about sixty to sixty-five minutes for him, but he made it all the way to around the seventieth minute. I wanted to wait until the hydration break to make the change, so that I could have longer to talk tactics with Kevin (Kratz) who was about to come on.”

On his decision to not start Ezequiel Barco and how he looked once he came on…

“I thought his attitude was great when he came on and it was nothing more than a decision not to start him. The fact that Colorado plays a high line and is compact, I thought it would be better to start another forward instead of a midfielder to try and take advantage of the wings and get in behind the centerbacks.”

Atlanta United FC Midfielder Miguel Almirόn

On his two goals today…

“I think we have to talk more about the team and what my teammates were able to do. They put in a great effort. We value these three points and are going to work to get better.”

On the importance of having Darlington Nagbe on the field…

“Every player is important, but (Darlington) Nagbe is a very special player. We missed him a lot, so I’m glad he was able to get healthy soon and be back on the field.”

On the key to having so much success this season on the road…

“I think our team is tighter this year. The players on the bench have done a really nice job as well and that makes us feel more united on the field. We have to keep it up for the rest of the season.”

Atlanta United Midfielder Darlington Nagbe

On how he felt today…

“I felt okay. I felt good on the ball and physically I’m just trying to get my fitness up and get back into shape, but overall I felt pretty good.”

On Colorado’s press…

“They are pretty good at pressing, but I thought we did an even better job playing out of it and turning them over in their half and then creating chances from that. Overall it was a good performance.”

On what he can do better leading into the next game…

“I think I just need to keep the ball a little better and try to tire the other team out more.”

Colorado Rapids Head Coach Anthony Hudson

On the 90 minutes…

"Obviously disappointed, and frustrated. In the end, they have created lots of chances, but they punished themselves for their mistakes. What's frustrating for me is there are periods in the game where we do such good things, which is difficult for me to say that when we just lost the game 3-nil. This [Atlanta] is a team who are at the top, top level of the league and I think we saw the difference in the cutting edge in the goal tonight."

On what went wrong defensively…

"It comes down to mistakes, losing the ball in bad areas. If you look in the second half, we probably won the ball so many times in their half. I haven't seen many teams that have done that to Atlanta. I have yet to see a team that has pressed them off the pitch and forced them to turnover the ball in their half. I'm disappointed for the players. No one gave up in the second half. They could quite easily against a team like that, they've got an excuse. Conditions are tough, they're playing one of the top teams, they're 3 nil down, I thought the response was excellent from the players.”

On what he's looking for from the team going forward…

"In the background, we as a staff, as a club, are so clear about what we need and where we're headed. From where we are compared to preseason, we are very, very clear on the type of positions we need to improve. Everyone’s working 24/7 to identify and make sure we make the right decisions in that area. From a playing standpoint, it’s all about delivering big performances."

On what he needs to improve the team…

"I think it's clear, we need to bring in attacking players."

Colorado Rapids Midfielder Kellyn Acosta

On the match…

"Definitely a tough match. I don't want to say unlucky because there were some costly mistakes and times where we just weren't clean enough. There were several times we passed the ball out of bounds or to the opposing team without any pressure. With a quality team like Atlanta, they're very clinical from the goal, they took chances. In the second half, we came and we rebounded, that opened up the ball more and created some options. It was disappointing to just let in three easy goals. It's frustrating to have this result."

On the difference in the second half…

"Just playing a little bit quicker and being clean on the ball. I think when we're clean on the ball, we move it faster and good things happen. They got a little bit tired the second half, the game opened up and we still had some legs left and it showed. We were still pressing and I thought our pressing was decent. We forced them to have multiple turnovers and we're just missing that critical aspect of the goal."

Colorado Rapids Defender Kortne Ford

On today’s match…

“It’s a frustrating one, just a weird game for all of us. I think that we missed a lot of short and simple passes. We just started on a bad run as early as the fifth minute, so it’s frustrating for us, but at the end of the day we have to have a strong enough mentality that we can bounce back from that and put in a performance. Our mistakes killed us again, but in the second half, we can play with a team like that when we play together and our mentality is right.”

On facing a strong Atlanta side…

“They’re a great side. Their positioning, they threw a lot of numbers at us, especially in the midfield. We turned the ball over a few times in the midfield early on in the game and we got punished for them, so I think that's the biggest thing. You know they’re really good, aside from other teams,  you might make three or four of those mistakes in a game, but you won’t necessarily get punished for them. Atlanta is a good side and they definitely punish for them.”

On having a better second half…

“We just had to get back into the flow, connecting passes right out of the gate in the second half, get our confidence back and then once that happened we could push forward. You saw, as everyone else did, once we sort of started doing that we could create our own chances and I think if we could’ve started that from the beginning of the game it would have been an even game.”
