Atlanta United’s Unite & Conquer Cancer campaign’s mission is to give a voice to children and young adults that are fighting or have survived their battle with cancer. This campaign will provide a platform to recognize the great work Atlanta’s hospitals, organizations, and non-profits are doing to make strides in pediatric cancer research while providing excellent care to children that are suffering with cancer or terminal illness. The Unite & Conquer Cancer campaign stems from MLS WORKS’ annual Kick Childhood Cancer (KCC) initiative to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. UNITE & CONQUER CANCER – BE BOLD, REP GOLD will be a month-long platform for the club, with awareness efforts in-game, in the community and through our social presence.
The 2020 Unite & Conquer Cancer Scarf (September Scarf of the Month) was designed by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta patient, Dani Cuevas from Sharpsburg, GA. Dani, 14, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (ALL) in August 2019. She loves artwork and after seeing Valerie DeSantiago’s (2019 September Scarf of the Month designer) scarf, she wanted to be the 2020 designer. She loves to watch soccer and is a huge Atlanta United fan.
When Dani designed the Unite & Conquer Cancer Scarf, she was asked to create a visual representation of what soccer and pediatric cancer mean to her. The scarf features a sunflower in the center, which Dani drew because sunflowers stand tall, are bright and yellow. The words “Atlanta Warriors” are written because she’s a warrior as she fights cancer. The scarf has a bright color scheme since she likes bright colors. Dani included the Atlanta skyline because she loves to see it as she drives through into the city for hospital visits since she lives south of Atlanta.
