In only the club's second year of existence, Atlanta United won the League title at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, after beating the Portland Timbers in the 2018 MLS Cup, by a score of 2-0. Argentinean Franco Escobar and Venezuelan Josef Martínez scored the two goals to give the club its first championship. Martínez also won the MLS Cup MVP and was named Major League Soccer's MVP. It was the second major title for the city of Atlanta, and the first one in more than 23 years after the Braves won the World Series in 1995. It is also considered the second soccer title for the city after the Atlanta Chiefs won the now defunct North American Soccer League back in 1968.

Pity Martinez scored the eventual match winner in the 16th minute, six minutes after the hosts took the lead through an unusual own goal, and Atlanta captured their first-ever Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United.
